    Dr. José Torres is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Social Work, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare (HBSSW), UW- Milwaukee. His almost 50-year career includes experiences as a psychotherapist (individual/couple/family), educator, clinical supervisor, and consultant, including:

    • Clinical Social Worker/ Marriage & Family Therapist at Family Service of Milwaukee
    • Clinical Supervisor of Mobil Crisis Intervention Service Team, Milwaukee County Mental Health Center
    • Associate Dean of Student Affairs & Director of Minority Affairs, Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, at the Medical College of Wisconsin
    • Supervisor and psychotherapist at UWM’s Norris Student Health Center
    • Professor of Social Work, UWM HBSSW
    • Faculty member of Aurora Health Care Family Therapy Training Institute
    • Mental health practice and clinical supervision at a local behavioral health clinic providing in-home and outpatient therapy
    • Independent consultant/educator

    Dr. Torres continues to maintain his long-term interest and commitment to the understanding and practice of culturally responsive health care, including a focus on multicultural competence and cultural humility perspective from an intersectionality framework. This includes the active and purposeful use of the clinician and supervisor’s personal life experiences and cultural backgrounds in professional practice.

    Dr. Torres, a bilingual-bicultural mental health clinician and educator was born in Puerto Rico and spent his early youth and adolescence in New York City (Spanish Harlem). He is a long-time Milwaukee resident, who values his time with his wife, three adult children, and three precious grandchildren.
